Week 1_Wednesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 1:39-56   Soap Luke 1:45-50

Mary's own Savior would grow inside her very womb!  Many commentators believe that she had good knowledge of the Old Testament scriptures, as her Magnificat refers to several OT promises.  I wonder if she was chosen in the first place because of her scriptural faith and knowledge.  An interesting thought.

Mary acknowledges her own need for a Savior (vs. 47), just one scriptural evidence of her humanity and fallen state.  She was a highly favored woman chosen to bear God's Son.  However, she also needed a Savior and is not a deity to be prayed to.  Her song of praise mentions God's faithfulness, power, holiness, mercy, and favor on Israel.  We can still sing this song with her today, as all of those blessings still apply!

How perfect for Mary and Elisabeth to spend 3 months together - they were in the same condition.  Both experienced miraculous pregnancies that would change the world.  They both were women who feared God (vs 50).  Sadly, this upcoming generation generally does not fear God.  Father, help me to teach my children the fear of the Lord.  Help them to realize their own need for a Savior and develop a respect for God.

  1. Good morning! I truly don't know about blogging first today, but felt like sharing a couple of things. I have never before realized to the degree that Mary believed, trusted and submitted. She then rejoiced! She could have been fretting over all the potential things that she stood to lose (like her life) if God failed to keep his promises. I do not see that, but I see trust and then rejoicing instead. I also love how that she refers to herself as a humble servant. It helps us all to relate a little more. Believe, trust, submit and rejoice!!

  2. My thoughts are that Mary recognized what a wonderful thing God had chosen for her, even though it was probably very scary as well. And then she just wanted to share it. In her song she is just gushing over with thankfulness and praise for the Lord. I need to recognize my blessings are from the Lord and give him the credit.

  3. Good Morning Girls

What a blessing to be able to live in a free country where we can study together without any fear of persecution for our beliefs. Gary and I were discussing how spoiled we are as a nation and especially as God’s people. We assume electricity, heat, vehicles, our jobs, our church and all our freedoms in this nation will always be there. But what if one day they are not? What do we rely on then? Obviously, I would hope all our answers would be God. Like the old saying “God is all you got, when God is all you got”. This had to be the very case in Mary’s life, who else was going to support her in the most glorious moments of her life? We know the answer to that it….God, because at that time He was all she had. She couldn’t tell her parents, she couldn’t tell Joseph for sure, he would never believe her. I’m sure Mary must have believed Gabriel when he told her of Elizabeth but to see this miracle for herself would have been a treasured moment in her life. Mary’s trip to see Elizabeth was a confirmation in each of their lives, one woman barren for a lifetime, the other a virgin with no husband, but when they came together the spirit of the Lord blessed them both with the courage to face what was to come.
As I look at our soap scriptures today, I see Mary’s spirit so humble and sweet before the Lord. She knew in human eyes who she, was a lowly servant. But in God’s eyes, a Mother to the Savior of the world and generations to generations would call her blessed. He must have seen something very special in Mary and she was quite skilled in the word of God, for her Magnificat relays all her knowledge of the Lord God and the mercy He showed to her people. What an awesome and fearful time in her life, but I would think she would always cling to that moment when she was going about her day just like any other and a glorious moment came and changed her life forever more. Amen!! I pray that happens to all of us. That in a moment our lives would totally be changed and God would use us in a way that would glorify Him the greatest and bring the most to His kingdom.
    Have a blessed day Ladies!!

  4. This questions was in the footnotes of Vs 45 in my bible. "What would have happened had Mary not believed Gabriel's words?" How many times has the Lord spokent o me and I've dismissed it because it didn't make sense or didn't fit into my plan? How many missed opprotunities and blessing because I chose not to listen or believe. This verse 45 really convicted me and made me realize how importnat it is to listen when the Holy Spirit moves.

One other thing I observed was even thought Mary faced a difficult road ahead she didn't grumble or complain. She sang praises to God!! Oh how I would love to sing praises to God in middle of the storm's of my life!! I can only imagine the joy and peace Mary felt as she lifted her voice in praise.

  5. Great point about Mary's maturity at such a young age. She must have had a heart for God to respond as she did.

  6. The same God who did great things for Mary is still mighty and is still doing great things for me and you. He never changes nor moves. God shows mercy on those who fear him-to fear him is to have been touched by him. You know there is a God and he is real, deep in my heart his love I feel.....
