Week 1: Wednesday

Read: Luke 17:11-19

SOAP: Luke 17:17-19

This Samaritan that returned to thank Jesus for his healing was certainly the most unexpected one.  He was not a Jew, but rather an outcast of society as a half-breed.  Yet he was the only one who praised God and returned to thank Jesus.  I see this happen in our culture today where the most grateful people to God can often be the unchurched new converts that don't know as much about Him.  We seasoned Christians can often lose our gratitude and gain an entitlement spirit with God.  Father, forgive me for my ungratefulness.  Thank you for the countless ways you have blessed me and given me far more than I deserve.

  1. Good Morning Girls

I love these verses that the Lord has placed here in Luke, showing us that no matter what our status or place in life is; Jesus will look on everyone as the same. There aren't a lot of details about these lepers but what can be known is that nine of them were Jews and only one of them a Samaritan. I say this because by sending the lepers to show themselves to the priests they would have to be Jews and it was commonly know that Jews and Samaritans had no dealings with each other, with exception of this disease, it seems that then the “I’m better than you line” was torn down. The nine hurried away anxious to regain their place back in society but it was the Samaritan who return to worship his Lord for the miracle that had been done in his life. I hope that I as a Christian never forget this example.

And I think the lesson here for me is not to place one person above another. As I said earlier, Jesus views all of us the same, whether we are educated, talented, rich or poor, we are equals in His eyes. He will receive all and if we ask He will put us exactly where we need to be. His life is my example to live by and shows me how I am to treat others. I need to be more diligent in giving praises to Jesus for things done in my life and pray that it would always give Him the most glory.

  2. What a glorious moment with a thankful heart. In those dark moments in our life, it is easy to cry out to God. Knowing He is there and He hears our every cry. Yet, when God changes our circumstances and our lives are going along a smooth stretch... it is easy for our focus to drift from the things of God. For our hearts to take things for granted.

Lord please turn my eyes to you. For it is from You which all blessings flow. It is You that deserve the glory.

  3. Good point about God's sovereignty. You're exactly right that we must live the Philippians 4:11 truth daily.

  4. Yes, suffering has a way of focusing our hearts back to Him. Good thought.
