I wanted to understand these verses better, so I read some commentary. One of them said that Jesus took a passage of vengeance and judgment upon the Gentiles and turned it into a passage of mercy and blessing. They were ready for some one to pat them on the back and tell them it's okay to judge them ~ they deserve it anyway. Jesus was trying to teach the Israelites compassion, even for the Gentiles.
It makes me wonder how many people God has put in my path that I haven't taken the time to notice or show compassion to. Who in my own life do I judge? I pray that God will open my eyes to see people as the soul He loves.
