Week 8: Friday

Read: Luke 24:50-53

SOAP: Luke 24:50-51

The word "bless" means = to bestow goodness and favor, and to invoke such qualities upon another.  Jesus blessed the disciples before His ascension.  His blessing allowed their ministry in Jerusalem and beyond to be successful.  Without God's blessing, our attempts at ministry will not accomplish much.  I continuously pray for God to bless our efforts and our ministry.

Thank you for participating in this great Bible study.  GoodMorningGirls has another study coming up in November.  I will post information about it shortly.

Week 8: Thursday

Read: Luke 24:44-49

SOAP: Luke 24:46-47

Jesus wanted the disciples to share the gospel above all.  He opened their hearts to understand the entirety of scripture - it was prophesied that He would die and rise again.  The disciples would be empowered by the Holy Spirit to share this in Jerusalem and all other nations.  God's desire is the same for us: that we understand the whole of the scriptures and share it with the world.

Week 8: Wednesday

Read: Luke 24:36-43

SOAP: Luke 24:38-39

Jesus sensed the doubt in their hearts before it was ever spoken.  He knows us in the very same way, sensing when we don't really trust Him.  Would He ask us the same question, "Why do doubts arise in your hearts?"  He has kept His promises to us, leaving us no reason to doubt Him.  Father, help me focus on your truth and not my volatile feelings.

Tuesday, October 22, 2013

Week 8: Tuesday

Read: Luke 24:13-35

SOAP: Luke 24:30-32

I love the description of the last verse in this passage.  When the heart truly absorbs God's truth, it burns with acknowledgement and response.  I pray that we all will allow God's Word to penetrate our lives and spirits.  We must also encourage a love for God's Word in our children.  Father, help me allow your Word to change my life.

Friday, October 18, 2013

Week 7: Friday

Read Luke 23:44-56

SOAP: Luke 23:46

God is the owner of our spirits.  Death is not the end because our spirits go into the presence of God.  God orchestrated every detail of salvation and certainly does the same for our lives.  I am so grateful that God sacrificed His Son for us and allows our spirits to reside with Him in His glory.

Thursday, October 17, 2013

Week 7: Thursday

Read: Luke 23:32-43

SOAP: Luke 23:34

I don't think I would risk my life for people, knowing that they would still reject me.  But Jesus didn't risk His life, He sacrificed it.  Jesus yearned to forgive these people even as they were abusing Him.  I am so grateful for the extent of Christ's love.  Even when I deny Him with my thoughts or behavior, He always wants to restore and forgive.  May I be as devoted to our relationship as He is.

Wednesday, October 16, 2013

Week 7: Wednesday

Read: Luke 23:26-31

SOAP: Luke 23:27

These women that wept for Jesus never understood the destruction that awaited their city.  The mourning and weeping was just beginning.  Jerusalem's demise was around the corner.  Would the same women continue to follow and trust Christ during this time?  It made me wonder if I too will continue to follow Christ through uncertainty and suffering.  Our country is experiencing great turmoil now.  Will I continue to follow Christ no matter what happens?

Tuesday, October 15, 2013

Week 7: Tuesday

Read: Luke 23:13-25

SOAP: Luke 23:23-25

I can't help but be disgusted by the injustice of Jesus' murder.  Imagine how believers must have felt during this joke of a trial.  An outsider might be tempted to sympathize with Pilate Pontius, but he really just caved to political pressure to murder an innocent man.  He could have resisted the crowd and chosen to do the right thing.  Nonetheless, God's ultimate plan was brought to pass through these tragic decisions.  I thank God for sending Christ to suffer this unspeakable injustice for my sins.

Monday, October 14, 2013

Week 7: Monday

Read: Luke 23:1-12

SOAP: Luke 23:3, 12

It's funny how conspiracy brings people together that otherwise would never collaborate, e.g.. Pilate and Herod.  But even the sins of people are used to bring about God's will.  It was prophesied that Jesus would die for mankind, and nothing could have stopped it.  These men were simply pawns in the master plan.  Perhaps if we viewed life more in light of eternity, trusting each detail as part of God's design, we would worry less about negative experiences.  For God uses the whole to create something beautiful, if we are willing to be used by Him.

Friday, October 11, 2013

Week 6: Friday

Read Luke 22:54-71

SOAP Luke 22:70

It didn't much matter what the Sandhedrin thought of Jesus.  Whether or not they admitted the truth, Jesus was indeed the Son of God.  Jesus' phrasing makes it clear that this was not about His own admission.  This was about the lack of faith from the people.  It made me think - do we continue to ask God for proof or do we trust that He will keep His promises?  I find my heart demanding proof more often than I rest in the promises of God's Word.

Thursday, October 10, 2013

Week 6: Thursday

Read: Luke 22:39-53

SOAP: Luke 22:40, 42, 46

Jesus was referring to daily encounters of temptation.  Prayer would prevent these daily encounters.  This situation also implies that we need to push through physical fatigue in order to pray.  The disciples could not stay awake long enough to pray.  Perhaps that is why they all scattered during the crucifixion of Christ.  What would have happened if they stayed awake to pray?  This is a much neglected discipline in our lives.  May we make sacrifices to pray sufficiently.

Wednesday, October 9, 2013

Week 6: Wednesday

Read Luke 22:31-38

SOAP Luke 22:31-32

The name Simon means = "God has heard," whereas Peter means = "Stone."  This passage is so touching, revealing the fact that Jesus prayed for Peter to be faithful.  After this terrible failure for Peter, he repents and lives out what Jesus predicted - he strengthens the faith of his brothers.  Pentecost, for one!  The omniscience of Christ is obvious, yet he still gives us the free will to make mistakes and learn in our faith journey.  I'm so grateful that Jesus prays for us still that our faith will not fail.

Tuesday, October 8, 2013

Week 6: Tuesday

Read Luke 22:14-30

SOAP Luke 22:25-27

The natural tendency in us to seek greatness and follow our pride.  Jesus wants us to put that on the altar - sacrificing our natural desires and replacing them with the desire to please Him.  It is hard to be a servant to Christ and is especially hard to be a servant to others.  I pray that God will give me the heart of a servant and recognize opportunities to serve.

Monday, October 7, 2013

Week 6: Monday

Week 6

Memory Verse: But not so with you.  Rather, let the greatest among you become as the youngest, and the leader as one who serves.  Luke 22:26

Weekly Challenge: This week be intentional and thank someone who regularly serves you. Write a note to a family member, bring a surprise “Thank You” treat to that co-worker who always seems to have a helping hand and encouraging word. Give a gift card to the woman who always stays late after Sunday school to help clean up or to the friend who always seems to be there to leading a helping hand just when you need it.

Read: Luke 22:1-13

SOAP: Luke 22:5-6

Satan used Judas as a pawn to murder Jesus.  Little did Satan realize that he too was being used as a pawn.  God was bringing His plan to pass, and Satan could not stop it.  In fact, his pawn Judas simply fulfilled prophecy that the Son of Man would be betrayed.  This thought made me realize that God is sovereign.  Concerning our lives today - everything that happens to us must first pass through His hands.  We can see this clearly in the life of Job.  Satan wanted to attack Job, but he needed permission from God first.  Know that God is sovereign and always makes the final decision.

Friday, October 4, 2013

Week 5: Friday

Read Luke 21:34-38

SOAP: Luke 21:34-36

It's so easy to see life today as the entire span of existence.  Yet life on earth will be a distant memory after Christ's return and an eternity in heaven begins.  Our world suffers from life avoidance - vices and habits that numb the pain of dealing with life.  Rather than living in a fog, Christ would have us alert, anticipating his imminent return.  May the focus of our lives be surrounded by His purposes and not our own.

Thursday, October 3, 2013

Week 5: Thursday

Read Luke 21:25-33

SOAP Luke 21:33

God created heaven and earth.  He created us.  As the source of life, we can trust what He says. God's Word is His everlasting gift to us establishing the faith relationship between us.  He wants to know we listen to His Word so that He can commune with us through prayer.  Great memory verse this week!

Wednesday, October 2, 2013

Week 5: Wednesday

Read: Luke 21:12-24

SOAP: Luke 21:14-15, 19

I love these verses today.  Jesus wanted to see faith from his followers, especially when persecution came.  Then he would give them "mouths and wisdom which none of your adversaries will be able to withstand or contradict."  Persecution has a refining quality, exposing believers who are completely trusting their Savior.  Let's remember our Weekly Challenge to trust the Lord and cling to Him even as the days get darker.  He longs to see our faith in action.

Tuesday, October 1, 2013

Week 5: Tuesday

Read Luke 21:5-11

SOAP Luke 21:8-9

The context of this passage was referring to the destruction of the Jewish temple, but can also be applied to the end of the world.  The message from Jesus here is similar to our Weekly Challenge.  We must not let the sinful world overrun our hearts and minds.  Sometimes we have to cling to the truth of God's Word and let our hope rest in Him.  The other option is to live in fear and constant discouragement.  I pray that God will give me a heart for truth.

Monday, September 30, 2013

Week 5: Monday

Weekly Challenge: Evaluate your worldly focus in your every day life: are you letting the negativity in the world bring you down, or are you looking to Jesus for your security and hope? Make a conscious effort this week to let your light shine in a dark world by changing the direction of a negative “world” conversation towards the hope we have in Christ.

Memory Verse:  Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Luke 21:33

Read: Luke 21:1-4

SOAP: Luke 21:3-4

Faith is all about risk and uncertainty.  The widow gave out of faith, not knowing where her next meal would come from.  When was the last time I sacrificed something for Christ?  I must respond to the Spirit's leading, knowing that He may call me to sacrifice and risk my own well-being for His glory.

Friday, September 27, 2013

Week 4: Friday

Read: Luke 20:41-47

SOAP: Luke 20:46-47

The long robes trumpeted the wearer as a devout and noted scholar.  These scribes sought out public opportunities to gain attention.  They wanted display, prominence, and money.  How is this different from unbelievers?  These men who practically had the Bible memorized still had the same goals and ambitions that lost people had.  This danger still occurs today - Christians who have absolutely no distinction from the unbelievers around them.  Doing and seeking the very same things.  Father, help me realize that my faith is about YOU, not about ME.

Thursday, September 26, 2013

Week 4: Thursday

Read: Luke 20:27-40

SOAP: Luke 20:38

Once again, the Sadducees are attempting to trap Jesus in His words.  They did not believe in angels, so Jesus exposed another one of their false beliefs.  It's easy to lose our grip of eternity in heaven.  We get caught up thinking that our earthly experiences are all we have to look forward to.  In heaven, we will finally be with God, our maker, and worship Him forever.  I think this passage indicates that earthly relationships will be meaningless by comparison to our relationship with God.  Here is another commentator's remarks:
The intimacy we experience here on earth is a symbol of a reality we will experience in glory.  The joy a married couple finds in their union will not be taken away, but will be multiplied, as we experience a closeness with others that is beyond us here and now.

Wednesday, September 25, 2013

Week 4: Wednesday

Read Luke 20:19-26

SOAP Luke 20:23-25

These spies that approached Jesus were deliberately trying to trap him with their questions.  They wanted to catch him opposing Caesar.  But Jesus geniusly maneuvers around their trap by telling them to give to Caesar whatever belongs to him and to God what belongs to Him.  This is another proof that Christ had not come to stir up political trouble.  He came to set up his spiritual kingdom.  The literal kingdom would come much later.  God's timing was perfect.

Tuesday, September 24, 2013

Week 4: Tuesday

Read Luke 20:9-18

SOAP Luke 20:17-18

The Parable of the Tenants has several characters.

Owner of the vineyard = God
the owner's servants = Old Testament prophets.
tenants = Jewish leaders
cornerstone/owner's son = Jesus Christ
heirs of the vineyard = Gentiles and outcasts who accept Christ

The audacity of the Jewish leaders is clear as they respond to Jesus, saying, "Surely not!"  How dare the owner of the vineyard make Gentiles and outcasts heirs!  They were not the promised nation - the Jews were.  This passage reveals the heart of God again: an unwillingness for anyone to perish.  I'm so grateful He made salvation available to ALL men, not just the Jews.

Monday, September 23, 2013

Week 4: Monday

Week Four

Memory Verse: He is not the God of the dead, but of the living, for to him all are alive.  Luke 20:38

Weekly Challenge: Jesus claims authority in every area of our lives.  Think and pray about areas in your life that you are reluctant to give over to Him.  Then pray that God would gently open your hands and show you that He knows what is best and will therefore do what is best.

Read: Luke 20:1-8

SOAP: Luke 20:7-8

Jesus knew that the priests, scribes and elders intended to trap him with their questions.  They were not the least bit sincere in their search for the truth.  This spirit of accusation is alive and well today in the hearts of skeptics.  Jesus knows the difference between the critic and the heart that is really seeking the truth.  I pray that I will approach every doubt and question with an open heart of faith.

Friday, September 20, 2013

Week 3: Friday

Read Luke 19:45-48

SOAP Luke 19:45-46

I read a commentary on this passage that I really liked. I have attached the comments below.

The court of the Gentiles was the only place in the temple that was available to the Gentiles. There the Jews could witness to their “pagan” neighbors and tell them about the one true and living God. But instead of being devoted to evangelism, the area was used for a “religious marketplace” where Jews from otherlands could exchange money and purchase approved sacrifices. The priests managed this business and made a good profit from it.  Instead of praying for the people, the priests were preying on the people! The temple was not a “house of prayer” (Isa. 56:7); it was a “den of thieves” (Jer. 7:11). Campbell Morgan reminds us that a “den of thieves” is a place where thieves run to hide after they have committed their wicked deeds. The religious leaders were using the services of the holy temple to cover up their sins (see Isa. 1:1–20). But before we condemn them too harshly, have we ever gone to church and participated in religious worship just to give people the impression that we were godly?

Good thought.

Thursday, September 19, 2013

Week 3: Thursday

Read Luke 19:28-44

SOAP Luke 19:40-44

The unbelief of Jerusalem is heartbreaking.  Their denial ended in swift destruction, as Romans under the rule of Titus invaded the city and starved out the people in AD 70.  I wonder if Christ would look upon our country with the same sorrow and dread.  We too are a people devoid of faith, not recognizing Jesus as our Messiah, and scorning his invitation to salvation.

I read a fascinating rendition of the siege of Jerusalem in Francine Rivers' Mark of the Lion series Book 1 - A Voice in the Wind.  I would encourage you to read this entire series.  Francine's books are always well-written and full of scriptural truth.  This series was especially touching to me.  http://francinerivers.com/books/voice-wind

Wednesday, September 18, 2013

Week 3: Wednesday

Read Luke 19:20-27

SOAP Luke 19:23-24, 26

The servant did not really expect the king to come back.  He was not at all concerned with the king's return so he did not bother with the king's business.  This describes the attitude of many believers today.  We live as if Christ will not return or as if he doesn't even exist.  As believers, our job is the same - to spread God's Word throughout the world.  The more we are faithful to do this work, the more responsibility we will be given.  God uses those that stay busy fulfilling His purpose.  I pray that I will faithfully work to advance God's kingdom.

Tuesday, September 17, 2013

Week 3: Tuesday

Read Luke 19:11-19

SOAP Luke 19:17

The nobleman in the parable represents Jesus.  Verse 14 represents the religious leaders who did not want Jesus to be king.  Here is an excerpt from a commentary:
The analogy of this parable was clear to Jesus’ hearers. Jesus was going away to receive a kingship. When He returned, He would establish His kingdom. Until that time His followers were to fulfill the responsibilities He gave them. On His return He would reward the faithful commensurate with their service to Him, and His enemies would be judged before Him.

Walvoord, John F. ; Zuck, Roy B. ; Dallas Theological Seminary: The Bible Knowledge Commentary : An Exposition of the Scriptures. Wheaton, IL : Victor Books, 1983-c1985, S. 2:253

Will Jesus find us faithful in fulfilling His purpose on earth?  Or will He find that we buried the truth of the gospel and never multiplied ourselves in anyone else?  I pray that God will help me use my talent to bring others to Him.

Monday, September 16, 2013

Week 3: Monday

Read Luke 19-10

SOAP Luke 19:8-10

Zaccheaus' heart change is evident because he is desperate to see Jesus, thus climbing the tree.  His repentance is also clear when he vows to repay all of the people he cheated.  I think Jesus proclaimed Zaccheaus' salvation for the benefit of those standing nearby, rather than Zaccheaus' benefit.  He wanted them to know that everyone could receive Christ, even an ill-reputed tax collector.  I like this story because I think it is evidence that those who seek Jesus will always find him.

Friday, September 13, 2013

Week 2: Friday

Read: Luke 18:31-43

SOAP: Luke 18:40-42

I think it's interesting how Jesus phrased his response to this blind man.  Jesus didn't say, "I have made you well."  Instead, he said, "Your faith has made you well."  I wonder if Christ would use the same verbiage today.  "Your faith has healed your marriage."  "Your faith has caused your child to respond to salvation."  "Your faith has challenged your brother to surrender his burden to me."  I am practicing my faith more and grateful for this reminder to completely rely on Christ.

Thursday, September 12, 2013

Week 2: Thursday

Read Luke 18:18-30

SOAP Luke 18:29-30

There was a big hindrance in this rich man's life that kept him from following Christ.  And Jesus identified it - materialism.  He basically said, "Son, your life will drastically change.  Your purpose cannot be wrapped up in wealth anymore, it has to be consumed with God's purpose."  The rich man knew that he would never be willing to give up his lifestyle for Christ.  I think the truth here is two-fold: 1) materialism will keep many from truly following Christ, 2) any hindrance to our relationship with God must be laid up the altar of sacrifice.  Jesus moves beyond materialism to stress that even a family member can prevent us from fully following Christ.  What do I put before God?

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

Week 2: Wednesday

Read: Luke 18:15-17

SOAP: Luke 18:16-17

This passage made me think of Ellie and Owen when they instinctively grab my hand as we walk somewhere.  That is a simple act of complete trust that mommy will lead them to safety.  We must approach God the same way - totally trusting Him to protect us and do what is best for us.  Faith should be that dependant: total trust in God to keep His promises.  Father, when I tend to manipulate my life, help me to trust you instead like a child.

Tuesday, September 10, 2013

Week 2: Tuesday

Read Luke 18:9-14

SOAP Luke 18:13-14

Comparing myself to others is an easy mistake to make.  However, the desire to view my own spirituality next to someone else's comes from a place of pride and arrogance in my heart.  Humility and repentance are valuable in God's sight.  Any good in me was not attained on my own, but given by Almighty God. The best I can do is not good enough and is worthy of death.  Viewing everyone as a helpless, lost soul levels the scales.  No one comes out on top, because all have fallen short of God's glory.  Father, thank you for being merciful to me, a sinner!

Monday, September 9, 2013

Week 2: Monday

Read Luke 18:1-8

SOAP Luke 18:6-8

Sometimes I feel like I'm bothering God with my prayers.  But this passage makes it clear that He wants to hear our requests.  Faith is evident when we trust Him enough to come to Him with our needs.  So no more guilt over continual prayers!  I have seen God intercede when I really got serious with my prayers.  It makes me wonder how many defeats come simply from failing to ask for victory.  Father, thank you for loving me enough to answer my prayers.  Help me run to you more often.

Friday, September 6, 2013

Week 1: Friday

Read Luke 17:26-37

SOAP Luke 17:26-27

In the days of Noah, people were living with a false sense of security.  They were wicked and sensual; totally focused on worldly matters.  They were living as if there was no judgment day approaching.  It was the same story in the days of Jesus and it's the same story today.  Even believers can be guilty of putting other matters before the spiritual.  We should be living in constant communion with Jesus.  His Word and ways should permeate every facet of our lives.  No one knows when Jesus will return so we must live in a "state of readiness" so that we may be unashamed on Judgment Day.

Thursday, September 5, 2013

Week 1: Thursday

Read Luke 17:20-25

SOAP Luke 17:20-21

We can always count on the Pharisees to get caught up in the semantics of prophesy.  They were distracting themselves searching for the kingdom of God, all the while its King was standing before them.  It astounds me how many times they missed the message of the gospel when it was clearly presented to them.  Not to mention Jesus' miracles that proved his deity as well.  I believe the spirit of this passage is to build our faith in Christ, rather than constantly wonder about the future.  He came to earth and died for us.  He wants our hearts - so the best we can give is an unshakeable faith in who Christ is.

Wednesday, September 4, 2013

Week 1: Wednesday

Read: Luke 17:11-19

SOAP: Luke 17:17-19

This Samaritan that returned to thank Jesus for his healing was certainly the most unexpected one.  He was not a Jew, but rather an outcast of society as a half-breed.  Yet he was the only one who praised God and returned to thank Jesus.  I see this happen in our culture today where the most grateful people to God can often be the unchurched new converts that don't know as much about Him.  We seasoned Christians can often lose our gratitude and gain an entitlement spirit with God.  Father, forgive me for my ungratefulness.  Thank you for the countless ways you have blessed me and given me far more than I deserve.

Tuesday, September 3, 2013

Week 1: Tuesday

Read Luke 17:5-10

SOAP Luke 17:9-10

Servants were so common during biblical times, so this example made a real connection with the disciples. We don't have servants in our culture and tend to promote an environment of equality and level ground. Our imaginations may need to help us out here to grasp this truth. Servants simply do what is required or them, expecting nothing in return. They lived to fulfill whatever need or demand was thrust at them. Do I have this kind of surrender with Christ?  Am I simply waiting for my directive so that I can eagerly follow?  Or do I sit around thinking about my rights and personal desires?  Father, give me a spirit of service to you.

Loving Like Jesus - Week 1: Monday

Week One

Memory Verse:

And the Lord said, “If you had faith like a grain of mustard seed, you could say to this mulberry tree, ‘Be uprooted and planted in the sea,’ and it would obey you.
Luke 17:6

Weekly Challenge:

Has bitterness and unforgiveness been holding you back from experiencing the freedom and joy you can have in Christ? Take steps of faith this week to hand your pain over to Jesus, ask Him to increase your faith and help you move in the direction of forgiveness and healing.

Monday:

Read Luke 17:1-4;  SOAP Luke 17:3-4

This passage makes me think of accountability in the body of Christ.  One of the distinctions between believers and unbelievers is that we are willing to confront each other in love.  We must approach a brother or sister who is caught up in sin to help bring repentance.  The kicker is that we must also receive the erring brother back into the fold with love after he repents.

Father, help me not to yield to temptation and cause someone else to stumble.  Give me the courage to address sin and warn others of its danger.  Help me forgive others as many times as you have forgiven me.

Anything Study - Week 8 Friday

Read Matthew 6:10

SOAP Matthew 6:10

One commentator described this verse as, "a willing submission to God's purposes, plans and glory.  This desire for God's kingdom is based on the assurance that God will fulfill all His covenant promises to His people."  Christ will indeed return.  We can choose to be a part of His plans or not.  I am praying that God will use me as His instrument to fulfill His plans.  Although I never know how big or small my part may be, I can only remain willing to be used by Him.

Read John 14:1-27

SOAP John 14:26-27

The Holy Spirit helps us understand God's Word and remember it.  If that isn't good enough, Christ also gives us His peace.  This passage makes me wonder if we simply underutilize the power of the Holy Spirit.  Maybe a simple request is what stands between me and spiritual victory.

Read James 1:2-8

SOAP James 1:2-4

Perhaps I can immediately take a step back from my burden and say, "God, are you allowing a chance for my faith to grow?"  How can I walk away from each negative situation with a positive internal response. Anything that forces more prayer to occur draws us closer to God.

Anything Study - Week 7 Wednesday

Read Ephesians 6:11-20

SOAP Ephesians 6:11-12

This passage is a must read for new believers because it gives us the tools for success in the Christian life. Knowing the truth of God's Word actually protects us from the enemy. Faith in the completed work of Christ is intregal to our functionality. The power of the Holy Spirit will fight battles for us. I'm so grateful for the armor of God.

Anything Study - Week 7 Tuesday

Read John 12:20-28

SOAP John 12:24-25, 28

Jesus' death bore much fruit - the salvation of every soul that would accept Him.  The loss of my life will also bear much fruit, not in paying for anyone's sin (for Christ did that already), but in glorifying God the Father.  Surrender of my plans, will, emotions, and every area of life results in a vessel that can fully be used for God's glory.  Just as Jesus said before His crucifixion, "God's will be done, not my own," I too must give up my life.  As long as God is getting the glory, any price or sacrifice is worth it.

Monday, July 15, 2013

Anything Study - Week 7 Monday

Read I Corinthians 1:18-25

SOAP I Corinthians 1:18, 20-21

In my opinion, one of the greatest battles we fight is getting the lost to realize their need of salvation.  In our culture, people often try to be good - teamplayers, faithful employees, good spouses, etc.  These are the ones that are so hard to save.  Many of them lead fairly successful and happy lives.  This is where the power of the Holy Spirit must step in to convince their hearts of the truth.  We are all equally in need of salvation, which may sound foolish to the world.

Anything Study - Week 6 Friday

Read Luke 14:15-24

SOAP Luke 14:16, 22-23

Jesus' point in this parable was that Jews and Gentiles alike were welcome in God's kingdom.  Destroying the belief that only Jews would be in heaven, Jesus words were very confrontational.  Just as the man giving the banquet did, we must also share the gospel with those who will receive it.  The man deliberately sought the poor and infirmed because they were more receptive to the invitation.  Some people will not "need" Jesus.  We must move on to the ones who recognize their need, sharing Christ with those who will receive Him.

Anything Study - Week 6 Thursday

Read John 17:20-25

SOAP John 17:20-21, 23

When you read these verses closely, it is clear that unity in the body causes the world to believe the truth.  When we come together, walking in the light of Christ and His truth, people will see the gospel clearly.  Sometimes I am guilty of behaving just like unsaved people, not differing in my desires or emotions.  But purposeful life in Christ should be distinct.

Father, please permeate my life until your light and love shine through.

Anything Study - Week 6 Wednesday

Read John 17:13-19

SOAP John 17:15-17

God's Word is truth and Jesus says God will sanctify us in the truth.  This phrase implies that staying in God's Word brings about sanctification.  We can't cling to a truth that we don't know.  Let us actively seek understanding for God's Word, thereby becoming sanctified daily.

Anything Study - Week 6 Tuesday

Read John 17:6-12

SOAP John 17:11

"That they may be one" - sounds like Christ wants us to come together.  It makes sense that we affect more people when we work together.  This is easier to practice in the church setting - all of us moving toward a common goal together.  My prayer is that our people will band together and let the Holy Spirit lead us to make disciples.  I'm going to look for ways to get people involved together so that we can effect the most change.

Anything Study - Week 6 Monday

Read John 17:1-5

SOAP John 17:2-3

I love verse 3, which explains why God provided salvation - "that they know you."  God provided an escape from hell, yes.  But it is comforting to know that He also longs to have a relationship with us.  This passage affirms that salvation is not just a one-time prayer, but a continual, purposeful relationship maintained by both parties.  I must constantly work on my end of this relationship, seeking God's intents in every area of life.

Anything Study - Week 5 Friday

Read Ephesians 2:1-10

SOAP Ephesians 2:10

God created us to please Him and have a relationship with him.  Sin separated us from this design; salvation reconciled us to this design.  Walking in the light is fulfilling His plan for us to have friendship with Him.  I love these verses that remind us how much God loves us.

Anything Study - Week 5 Thursday

The church in Acts is an example for us in taking care of her own.  It is such a blessing to see God's people aware of each other's needs and quickly respond to meet them.  It's hard for people to ask for help.  But if we listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit, I'm sure He will reveal those that need us to intercede for them.  I have often been the recipient of God's love shown through the generosity of His people.

Anything Study - Week 5 Wednesday

Read Philippians 3:7-11

SOAP Philippians 3:8-10

Anything I can accomplish in life that gives me significance is worthless compared to a relationship with Christ.  These verses also indicate that energy should be spent on futhering that relationship.  There are countless things to attain in life, but the effort to pursue Christ is more valuable than anything else.  Sometimes I don't live like it is.  I pray that God will transform my view of our relationship.

Anything Study - Week 5 Tuesday

Read: Mark 10:17-31

SOAP: Mark 10:21

Jesus was not adding another requirement to salvation of selling one's possessions.  Jesus knew this man's heart and that his riches were preventing him from following Christ.  It makes me wonder if I have things in my life that keep me from following Christ.  We all have different struggles.  I think my convenience or comfort can prevent the best potential relationship with Jesus.  Following Jesus requires sacrifice by taking up a cross.  I pray God will be able to use me.  I must keep from erecting walls to prevent that from happening.

Anything Study - Week 5 Monday

Read Romans 6:1-7

SOAP Romans 6:6-7

Sin enslaves people.  You can see this clearly in the eyes of broken people.  The deception of sin sadly blinds their eyes, convincing them that they are under control.  Salvation calls us to die to those sinful desires.  Instead of living for our own fulfillment, we now live to please God.  Father, when I am tempted to go back to sin, help me remember that I put that to death to gain life in You.

Anything Study - Week 4 Friday

Read Matthew 18:1-6

SOAP  Matthew 18:3-4

It seems that Jesus wants us to learn some important truths from children.  Children are completely dependent on their parents to provide for them.  This utter dependence is a simple faith on their parts that comes naturally.  In the same way, believers must be utterly dependent on God for salvation and daily needs.  We can connive and manipulate circumstances to work in our favor, but God wants us in a place of total trust in Him.  New believers can also teach this quality to us, as they rely on the Holy Spirit.  I will be observing my children today so that I can learn from them for a change.

Anything Study - Week 4 Thursday

Read Isaiah 29:13-16

SOAP Isaiah 29:13

Jesus quoted this verse to describe the hypocritical Pharisees in Matthew and Mark.  I think He would probably quote it again to describe many people in the church today.  Israel had gotten into ritualistic acts of worship that were meaningless to them.  How often do we go through the motions, not thinking about what we are doing at church?  We must deny the facade and live worship in our hearts, truly seeking a great relationship with Christ.

Anything Study - Week 4 Wednesday

Read 2 Chronicles 16:7-9

SOAP 2 Chronicles 16:8-9

I love verse 9, which states that God actively seeks to assist those with blameless hearts.  Knowing that God is watching us and enjoys helping us is very encouraging.  When we strive to know His Word and His ways, we can be considered blameless before Him.  As the Holy Spirit speaks to our hearts, let's respond by doing anything He promts us to do.  He promises His "strong support" for our obedience.

Christ will indeed return, keeping His promise to come again and gather His own to Him.  Although we may wonder if He has forgotten, He tarries simply to let more souls come to salvation.  For He is not willing that any should perish.  Let us see life through His eyes, knowing that every day is another opportunity to reach someone else with Christ's love and share the gospel.

Anything Study - Week 3. Tuesday

Read 2 Corinthians 4:1-18

SOAP 2 Corinthians 4:17-18

Life is so much more than what we experience here.  It's difficult to see past our own pain into the purpose God has for that pain.  Spiritual maturity allows the believer to step back and say, "What is God trying to teach me through this?"  I am asking God to help me see this present life as fleeting, knowing that the momentary affliction will one day end in glory.

SOAP  Luke 1:37-38

Gabriel's explanation was enough for Mary. Mary quickly accepted this mission to be the mother of God's Son. May I be this willing to accept God's mission for my life too.  As the book is teaching us, God can do anything with a life that is willing to give up anything. I pray that I will be pliable enough for God to do a wonderful work through me.

Anything Study - Week 2 Friday

Read Proverbs 21

Soap Proverbs 21:1

In context, I think this passage refers more to blessing acts of righteousness than God controlling leaders.  God's sovereignty allows Him to use even the sinful acts of man to accomplish his purposes.     I often become fearful when I think of our nation's leaders. But knowing that God is using even their wrong decisions to fulfill His plan is a real comfort.  The rest of Proverbs 21 includes several nuggets of truth, offering the best advice to leaders. I like verse 21, "whoever pursues righteousness and kindness will find life, righteousness and honor."

Anything Study - Week 2 Thursday

Read Hosea 2:14-17

SOAP Hosea 2:14

God's forgiveness and mercy is always available when we come to him in repentance.  Yes, the warnings are serious and and the consequence of sin is severe.  But His mercy is readily available for us when we return to Him.  I'm so relieved that God is quick to respond in mercy.  I unfortunately do not always extend forgiveness so quickly to others.  This verse is a good lesson for mothers, teaching us to speak kindly to our children when they need mercy.

Anything Study - Week 2 Wednesday

Read Hosea 1:2-11

SOAP Hosea 1:7

God was jealous for Israel because she had forsaken Him for false gods.  Hosea's life would become a mirror of God's feelings for Israel.  God loves us the very same way in that He will not settle for a divided love.  He doesn't want to be one of many loves; He wants to be our one and only.  Infidelity breaks His heart and drives Him to call us back to the relationship we were designed to have with him.  Father, help me understand how exclusive my love must be for you and prevent any encroachment.

Again, here's the book cover of an excellent novel rendition of Hosea.  Please read it one day.  You will be blessed!

Anything Study - Week 2 Tuesday

Read Deuteronomy 6:1-9

SOAP Deuteronomy 6:5

Verse 5, in context of the passage refers to letting Christ pervade every aspect of life.  Loving the Lord your God completely looks like this: talking about His Word at all times and even keeping it visible in your home.  I am so thankful for the spiritual conversations my parents constantly had with me or in front of me.  Our christianity was not limited to church services.  I never had suspicions that my parents were hypocrites because Christ controlled their lives.  I hope I can repeat history!

Fear seems almost absurd when I think about God fighting for me.  When we release our battles to him, we don't have to do the fighting.  It also ocurred to me that His Word is full of promises.  Promises that replace fear.  I should spend more time familiarizing myself with these promises.

Anything Study - Week 1 Friday

Read Romans 3:21-31

SOAP Romans 3:23

This passage is special to me since our latest kids musical was about the Romans Road.  This week's SOAP scriptures all coincide in the truth that salvation is not achieved by us.  No one can ever be good enough or keep all the rules enough to earn it.  Our best efforts just simply "fall short" of God's perfect holiness.  But the hopeful part of this passage is that there is no discrimination between different people; all can receive salvation.  I can't boast in myself or my works because it still isn't enough to earn salvation.  The sinner who has continuously lived in depravity cannot despair because salvation is still offered to him, despite the gross sin he may have committed.  We are all equal when it comes to receiving salvation.  Praise God!

Anything Study - Week 1 Thursday

Read Galatians 5:1-6

SOAP Galatians 5:1

Keeping the Mosaic law certainly was a yoke of slavery.  There were so many rules and procedures, as well as the additional laws the Jews included themselves.  But salvation is all about the work of Christ, not man's.  I'm so relieved, because I could never keep up with all the rules.  I constantly make mistakes, so I'm glad that salvation does not depend on me.  Sinners can never achieve righteousness on their own - only through the finished work of Christ on the cross.  Let's believe this in our hearts and live in victory that following Christ is not about keeping a set of rules.  It's about completely trusting the only one who is perfectly holy - Jesus Christ.

Anything Study - Week 1 Wednesday

Read Mark 2:13-17

SOAP Mark 2:17

Jesus was defined by intentionality.  Everything he did had a purpose - things like eating with tax collectors and their friends.  Jesus did this specifically to reach Matthew (Levi) and his friends.  I wonder if Jesus went into these social situations planning exactly what to say to spark a spiritual conversation.  I pray that the Holy Spirit will guide me with words to speak to unsaved people.  I am also asking for courage to start spiritual conversations so that I can reach these people with the gospel.

Ladies, I'm so excited about this new study!  I am making a few more manuals today for ladies who need them.  (It makes it so much easier to do this study when you have the whole study guide printed and ready to go.)  Please don't hesitate to ask if you want me to make you a manual that includes: 1) the study guide  2) reading plan  3) prayer journal.

SOAP I John 1:8

Walking in the light versus walking in the darkness.  We all need Christ and His saving grace.  As I sat talking to an unwed mother yesterday, it hit me clearly - I need God's grace just as much as she does.  If I say I have no sin, I deceive myself.  Trite as it may be, the ground certainly is level at the foot of the cross.  When we start seeing people through Jesus' eyes, we will see our own needs more clearly.  By God's grace, he has saved me from destruction.  I must pass this love and redemption along to someone else who desperately needs it.

It's good to be reminded of the consequences of unrepentance.  This life will ultimately end beginning an eternal life elsewhere.  This story must cause us to reach the lost now, knowing what awaits them if we don't.  John MacArthur says, "The lost will suffer an accusing conscience fed by undying memories of a lost opportunity and permanent irreversible separation from God and everything good."  Father, help me do everything I can to prevent people from this suffering.

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 16:13-15  SOAP Luke 16:13

This passage is so true - we can't serve God and money at the same time.  It's exhausting to keep up with the latest things, especially electronics!  There is such a freedom in forsaking that idea of having the newest things.  Women are particularly plagued with this, but seem to be in denial about it.  Shopping and obsessing over pretty things is almost a rite of passage into womanhood.  But try as we may to justify this thinking, it simply isn't Christlike.  Money is a wonderful tool that we can use to build God's kingdom.  We can also use it to obsess over ourselves or collect nice things.  Father, give me the fortitude to use my resources for your glory, not wasting it on myself.

This passage makes me think of the subject of integrity.  God has given each of us resources - time, money, talent, etc.  How we use those resources reveals our faithfulness to Him.  I struggle with time management and find that I am always running out of it.  But the faithful steward will strive to use every moment for a beneficial action - be it service, teaching, study, worship, etc.  God has been challenging me to take my "zone out" time and turn it into something beneficial - thereby being a better steward.  I am going to take this squandered time and spiritually use it.

A couple of points here.  First, the sinners with whom Jesus was associating were extremely valuable to Him.  Just like the coin worth a day's wages, these people were of great value.  Sometimes we forget how much God truly loves and values us.  Our relationship with Christ is designed to be one of closeness and love.  The other truth I noticed here is the various methods God uses to bring lost souls to himself.  He can use a friend, a stranger, tragedy, success, or the simple hearing of His Word to bring us to the end of ourselves, acknowledging our need for Him.  I'm so grateful for these parables that are wonderful reminders of God's love for us!

Jesus left the ninety-nine sheep to find the one that was lost.  I think this models the focus for the sheep in the church.  They must focus on reaching the lost, not stay within the comfort of the fold. The Pharisees were critical of Jesus' socialization with sinners, but he did this for a specific purpose.  When we find ourselves spending time with sinners - may we always focus on the intention.  We intend to win them to Christ.  That goal will drive conversations and activities in a very different direction.

I hate to keep referencing the same book, but I love the explanation Kyle Idleman gives of this passage.

Jesus is honest with the crowd about what it may cost to follow him.  He lets them know that following him may mean offending your parents or grandparents.  It may mean being cut out of the will or even cut off from the family.  I've talked to people who put off following Jesus because they don't want to hurt their parents' feelings.  Your brother or sister won't know what to make of your decision follow and they may distance themselves from you.  And Jesus is saying, "Yep, that may be part of it.  And if you're not willing to choose me over your family, then you are not ready to follow, and maybe it's time for you to go on home."

Some teachers have tried to soften these words of Jesus by saying they were only meant for a select few who would specifically be chosen to represent him.  But it says, "large crowds."  And when Jesus speaks to the "large crowds" he doesn't address a specific segment.  Did you notice the word he used in verse 26?  Jesus says, "If anyone..."  That's a fairly inclusive word.  Jesus isn't laying out the entrance requirements for the twelve disciples.  He is not talking to a seminary class.  He's not addressing a group of pastors and missionaries.  He's not just talking to kids who grew up in the church and professed their faith when they were ten.  What Jesus says is true for anyone who wants to follow him.

These Pharisees were really only doing what is normal for their culture.  It certainly hasn't changed much today - we tend to want to be valued by important, rich, or influential people.  Success is often determined by how popular you become or what type of people want to associate with you.  But Jesus turns this thinking upside down - telling us to associate with the poor, crippled, lame, & blind.  Love is often unreciprocated, but it is rewarded at the resurrection.  Father, help me to love the unlovable, knowing that my only reward may be given at your return.

I think Jesus was trying to assert that these Pharisees would certainly care for one of their own animals, even on Sabbath.  It struck me that we are Christ's own - He came to heal us.  No matter when we need him, His grace is available to us.  His purpose should become our own - reaching the needy with the gospel.  God's purpose should trump anything else on my agenda today.  We must be flexible to heed his calling when the opportunity arises, even if it inconveniences our tradition or routine.

Verse 24 makes me so sad - that Jesus desperately wanted to call Jerusalem his own and gather them under His wings, yet they rejected Him.  Do you suppose this sentiment is still expressed by Christ with his rejectors today?  I wonder how many times Jesus could have said that statement to me.  He wanted to have a close relationship with me, but I would not.

One day, Christ's second coming will affirm his lordship to everyone.  May it not take that to get us to follow Him - because then it's too late.  I need to look forward to His presence, saying, "Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!"  Father, forgive me for willingly keeping you at a distance.  Help me embrace the relationship you want to have with me.

Week 5_Thursday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 13:22-30. SOAP Luke 13:24-27

What a convicting passage to those who think they are doing everything right.  Just as verse 26 illustrates, we can presently say, "But Lord, we were faithful to church, taught classes, and listened to Christian music in your name."  His response will still be the same - that He never knew us.  A relationship with Christ is far different from good behavior.  He wants us to know Him instead of know about Him.  Salvation must culminate in a fruitful, communicative relationship with Christ.  It should not be considered a one-time decision.

Father, help me know and love you, not just know about you.  Forgive my apathy about communing with you.  Reminds me of a great book we are teaching in our Sunday School class right now.  It addresses this issue of relationship specifically.

The ruler of the synagogue and the other Pharisees in this passage were seriously missing the point.  Can you imagine their callousness in not caring about this poor woman who had finally been healed?  They couldn't even see beyond their detailed laws into the eyes of this needy woman.  Thankfully, we've left Sabbatical laws in the past.  But do we continue this attitude when people disrupt our tradition or routine?  Sometimes I see this in action with my own children.  I get annoyed when they interrupt me from doing important things.  But at the end of the day, it is more important that I love and train them than it is for me to get my "stuff" done.  I hope I can get beyond myself, both with my children and others who need love around me.

The Christian life is destined to bear fruit.  When we fail to bear fruit, we are not living out God's purpose for our lives.  How patient God has been with us.  He has every right to "cut us down" and remove us from influence.  Instead, He plants new soil around us, giving us another opportunity to bear fruit.  One commentator called this a, "Changing of methods in the divine treatment of the impenitent in order to freshen spiritual culture."  To be honest, that scares me!  I don't want to find out what God has to resort to so that I will finally bear fruit.  May I be fruitful now, discipling others as is His intended purpose.

I realize how blessed I am to have so much family that also follows Christ.  I have never been persecuted by my family for what I believe.  Unfortunately, there are so many people that must stand alone in their families as the only believer.  For them, following Christ costs much more, often damaging relationships with loved ones.  Sometimes this division can discourage the believer, causing him to think he caused the rift.  I pray that my faith is strong enough to impact unbelievers, creating enough of a discomfort, that they see the distinction of Christ in me.

I think these verses are easy to misinterpret.  I often read over these and think, "I need to be expectant that Christ will return at any moment."  But I think the focus, instead, is what I should be doing until He returns.  The servant who is obedient even when the master is not watching is blessed.  I must be found fulfilling Christ's purpose when He comes back.  His purpose is making disciples.

Father, how can I build your kingdom today?  Help me do everything I can to point others to you.  Help me identify self time wasters in my life that keep me from growing your kingdom.  Help me realize that I have been entrusted with much and that more is required from me.

"For one's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."  That verse is actually quite comforting to me.  As women, it's easy to compare ourselves with others - always striving to obtain things.  The average American woman spends an enormous amount of money on things that don't meet a personal need, but instead fill an emotional void.  We don't have to be average!  Let us recognize the lies from the media and entertainment industry that drive us toward perfection.

What a blessing it would be to meet the needs of someone else, rather than "store up things" for ourselves.  Jesus was right when he said that it truly is more blessed to give than receive.  This is difficult for me since I have a natural bent toward self.  I pray that God will give me opportunities to be a blessing to others and use my assets to show His love.

Read Luke 12:1-12  SOAP Luke 12:4-5, 7

Charlotte Jenkins said something yesterday regarding this passage.  As we were discussing the physical suffering going on in our church body, she added, "There are so many things worse than death."  She was so right - according to Luke 12:5.  It's interesting that in the same paragraph that tells us to fear God, Jesus is describing how much He loves us.  Sickness and death are not the end of life, yet Christians often make it seem that way.  Our prayer requests often surround the physical needs of each other.

It's as if Jesus is saying, "Hey, I love you and want  a relationship with you.  I know everything about you.  Don't keep trying to protect your body from harm.  It's distracting you from having a right relationship with me."  Father, help me to live in the reality of your presence, investing in my relationship with you.  Help me to fear displeasing you so much that I shift my focus from the physical to my spiritual condition.

Week 3_Friday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 11:45-54  SOAP  Luke 11:46, 52-53

The "heavy burdens" mentioned in verse 46 refer to the extra laws of legalism the Pharisees were imposing upon people.  This legalism was so intense that it "took away the key of knowledge" to the scriptures.  Having endured a heavily legalistic atmosphere in the past, I know exactly how this feels.  And that's exactly what it produces - people who know how to follow rules, but don't know the scriptures.  This is so dangerous because it often produces a false sense of hope in Christians.  We can never do enough good outwardly to balance out the bad inwardly.  I MUST convey this to my children - that I am more concerned about their heart condition than their ability to "look right."

Father, forgive me when I fail to take the time to truly commune with you in an understanding of your Word.  Help me realize that you want me and my heart, not just my exterior.

Week 3_Thursday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 11:37-44  SOAP Luke 11:39-40, 42

Wow, the scripture really speaks for itself here.  I think the Pharisees had the same problem the American church has:  Working hard to present an external image that doesn't match the heart condition inside.  I wish I would have practiced this truth in my early adult years.  Why we do we strive to appear like we have it all together when we suffer internally from sin?  Father, help me to consider my heart condition more important than public perception.  Forgive me when I fail to match the inside with the outside.  Give me courage to address the sin that so easily besets me.

Week 3_Wednesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 11:29-36  SOAP Luke 11:29, 33-34

Faith is either present or it's not.  I think the generation Jesus described in this passage is very much like our current generation.  They lack faith because they say they are looking for proof or a sign.  But faith is a choice.  When we interpret God's Word with "healthy eyes of faith," our bodies will be "full of light."  I like John MacArthur's explanation here, "The problem was their perception, not a lack of light.  They did not need a sign; they needed hearts to believe the great display of divine power they had already seen."

May we have hearts of belief to see the great display of divine power we've already seen.

Week 3_Tuesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 11:14-28  SOAP Luke 11:17, 28

Verse 28 especially hit home with me today.  Although I am certainly not the virgin Mary, I often find myself esteemed because of who I am related to.  (I am sure several of you ladies find yourself in this position too.)  People often think more of me because of my parents or grandparents.  Although I appreciate the sentiment and kindness from those who love my family, it does not negate my obligation to walk by faith on my own.  Mary was Jesus' mother, but still needed a Savior.  I am a pastor's wife, daughter, & granddaughter, but I still need a Savior.  I cannot depend on anyone's faith but my own.  I alone must "hear the Word of God and keep it."  Father, help me take full responsibility for my relationship with you, knowing that I will be held accountable for how I practice your Word and let it rule my life.

Week 3_Monday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 11:1-13  SOAP Luke 11:2-4, 13

Jesus' example of prayer delineates five things we can pray:

1.  Pray for God's reputation to be revered by men. -  "Hallowed be your name"
2.  Identify with the message of Jesus and His followers - "Your kingdom come"
3.  Ask for food necessary to sustain life - "Give us each day our daily bread"
4.  Forgiveness of sins - "Forgive us our sins"
5.  Deliverance from situations that will tempt us to sin - "Lead us not into tempation"

Verse 13 clearly explains that God wants to grant our requests.  Let us not neglect to ask Him!

Week 2_Friday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 10:38-42  SOAP Luke 10:41-42

This specific passage has blessed me so much because it is so relevant to me personally, and to our church right now. The original language of Martha's "distracted with much serving" means, "dragging all around."  So she was being unnecessarily detailed and elaborate.  How often does this happen in ministry where we focus on all the wrong things?  The most important thing is sitting at Jesus' feet to learn from Him.

Warren Wiersbe says it best:

"Consider Martha’s situation. She received Jesus into her home and then neglected Him as she prepared an elaborate meal that He did not need! Certainly a meal was in order, but what we do with Christ is far more important than what we do for Christ. Again, it is not an either/or situation; it is a matter of balance.
The key is to have the right priorities: Jesus Christ first, then others, then ourselves. It is vitally important that we spend time “at the feet of Jesus” every single day, letting Him share His Word with us. The most important part of the Christian life is the part that only God sees. Unless we meet Christ personally and privately each day, we will soon end up like Martha: busy but not blessed."

Week 2_Thursday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 10:25-37  SOAP Luke 10:27, 37

I found that there was a prevailing belief among the Jews that they should hate people who reject God.  Jesus' answer to the lawyer dispels that incorrect thinking, commanding them instead to love all people.  By giving the example of the Samaritan, Jesus puts all men on level ground - further confusing the lawyer.  The story Jesus shared tells us to seize every opportunity to show God's love.  An unexpected kindness may just spark a necessary conversation with someone, in turn saving his soul.  Father, help me recognize opportunities that you have given me to share your love.

Week 2_Wednesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 10:17-24  SOAP Luke 10:19-21

It's interesting to note the finality God views our relationship to Him.  Our names are "written in heaven." (vs 20)  The Greek word "written" means to inscribe formally and solemnly.  It is used in the signing of a will, a marriage document, or a peace treaty.  That certainly makes me feel safe!  We can trust God like a child trusts mommy or daddy.  In fact, we are encouraged to become childlike in our faith, because that's what allows us to understand God's will. (vs 21)

Week 2_Tuesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 10:8-16  SOAP Luke 10:8-9, 16

I think that personal pride often stands in the way of discipling.  We think that people will reject us or criticize us.  But Jesus tells us that those who reject us are really rejecting Him, as well as the One who sent Him.  The great commission is not about me or how it makes me feel when people reject the truth.  No matter how people make me feel, I am called to work in God's harvest.  Father, help me get beyond my own pride to share the truth from your Word.

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 10:1-7  SOAP Luke 10:2-3

This send-off from Jesus sounds more like a warning than a pep talk!  Working in God's harvest is not for the fainthearted.  Sometimes we will be rejected or scorned.  Sometimes the gospel will fall upon ears who don't want to receive it.  We just have to shake the dust off and move on to those who will hear.  I pray that God will "toughen me up" so that I don't get discouraged in the ministry.  Like Christ, we will face untold struggles when dealing with unrepentant hearts.  Keep the faith!

Week 1_Friday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 9:49-62  SOAP Luke 9:58, 60, 62

This dialogue between Jesus and the people is timeless.  We make excuses when it's actually time to step out in faith.  Excuses reveal the unwillingness of the heart - as kind of hoping the opportunity doesn't work out so that I am not obligated to it.  We must never quench the Holy Spirit.  If He is calling us to act, let us act - even if we don't have all the details.  He blesses obedience every time.

Good Friday - Let us remember what Jesus endured for us today.  He took our sin as His own.  I am looking forward to the service tonight.

Week 1_Thursday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 9:37-48  SOAP  Luke 9:47-48

A child represents simplicity and humility.  Children need everything done for them - a fact distinctly proven by toddlers!  But this reminded me that motherhood fits the description of this kind of greatness the disciples wanted to acheive.  Motherhood often seems unrewarded and includes some humbling duties.  Personally, God has used this to refine me and my view of service.  Sometimes people will be ungrateful or even scorn our service.  Nonetheless, we are told to serve anyway.  Christ certainly did that for us.

Week 1_Wednesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 9:21-36  SOAP Luke 9:23-26

These verses clearly describe how seriously Jesus considers discipleship.  Following Him must be approached in the same way.  Sometimes I am tempted to give unsaved people the impression that I'm normal like them, instead of the unapproachable do-gooder.  But Jesus describes following him as taking up a cross and losing your life.  In short, the Christian life consists of hard choices and heartache.  We know, of course, that there is abundant joy.  But truly following Christ includes laying everything on the altar, allowing God to dictate what must stay or go.  Father, help me to take following you so seriously, that nothing is spared from your altar.

Week 1_Tuesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 9:10-20  SOAP Luke 9:16-17

I wonder if Jesus was challenging the disciples here to act first in faith.  Verse 13 says, "But he said to them, 'You give them something to eat.'"  Perhaps Jesus was waiting for them to do something, believing God would miraculously provide.  Often times, we hold back, thinking that whatever we have to give is too small for the need.  But God has a way of multiplying the offering!  Jesus was not bound by earthly laws.  He was able to multiply one lunch into more than enough.  Certainly, He can handle anything life throws at us.

Week 1_Monday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 9:1-9  SOAP Luke 9:3-5

I've always struggled with this passage since I'm a planner.  But I think that I'm seeing the point Jesus wanted to make with His disciples.  "Go and fulfill my mission of spreading the gospel."  Sometimes we can get caught up in trying to arrange too many details.  If we have a heart for the world, God will provide what we need along the way.  Perhaps instead of trying to work everything out in our heads, we should just go and serve.

This can certainly apply to our missions trip.  Instead of trying to plan everything out to the smallest detail, we should just go with the intention of being a blessing to those we encounter.  I know I will be tempted to over-plan.  But, why am I going?  Am I going to experience the best Arizona has to offer?  (That certainly requires planning.)  No, I'm going on a missions trip.  Let's remember to focus our efforts and that the experience of serving is distinct from anything else we've ever done.  God blesses our love for people and service to them, no matter how well-planned the action is.

Week 8_Friday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 8:40-56  SOAP  Luke 8:48, 50, 54

"Do not fear, only believe."  Faith replaces fear.  The two people represented in this passage were distinct from others because of their great faith.  The woman knew that simply touching Jesus would give healing, but she was afraid to be seen.  Jairus was afraid that healing was too late.  In both cases, Jesus still healed, reminding them to "go in peace" and "do not fear".

It's easy to live in fear, imagining all the horrible possibilities of pain and heartache.  (That's why I very rarely watch the news.  It usually just scares me.)  But Jesus wants us to believe in Him rather than fear.  Let's pray when we are afraid, believing that He will carry us through any situation.  He can even carry us through advanced cancer or the death of a child.  Let us pray for faith for those in our midst specifically experiencing this.

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 8:26-39  SOAP Luke 8:39

A simple command Jesus gives - for all of us to follow, "Return to your home, and declare how much God has done for you."  Those who have been delivered from much, have much to declare!

I'd like to praise God for what He has done for me.  Specifically, He has carried me through some severe financial and marital heartache.  He has given me grace when I was surrounded by enemies.  He has protected me and given me friends when I lived in places where I knew no one and was unfamiliar with the culture.  He has blessed me with two children that were conceived and delivered without any complications.  He has blessed our church even though we feel unworthy to lead sometimes.

Father, thank you for your many blessings!

"Bearing fruit with patience" - I wanted to research this more.  I know what the fruits of the Spirit are, which certainly applies here.  But it seems that this passage is referring to faith that patiently endures testing.  James 4 refers to faith that has works and give the examples of Abraham and Rahab.  Abraham sacrificed his son Isaac, all the while trusting God to deliver him.  Rahab risked her life protecting God's spies from capture.  Faith for them was a big risk!

God's Word will sustain us, especially during times of testing.  We must cling to it so that we can patiently endure.

Ladies, please intentionally pray for our dear friend Heather Litchford.  She and Brian received some devastating news about their baby.  Please pray that God will miraculously heal Lily.  Also please pray that He will give them mercy during the next few weeks.

Week 8_Monday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 8:1-8  SOAP Luke 8:5-8

I've always thought of this passage referring to salvation responses.  But after looking more closely, it seems to refer to a general response to God's Word.  So I can personally apply this to my own heart.  Am I receptive to the truth of God's Word?  Or do I let the enemy's lies cover up the truth?  (birds devouring the seed)  Do I wash out when action is required because I am not rooted in God's Word?  (seeds on the rocks)  More commonly, do I get distracted by worldly things that do not eternally matter?  (seeds among thorns)

How often am I producing fruit a hundredfold?   I must intentionally invest in my personal relationship with Christ, through studying His Word and prayer.  Father, forgive me for my apathy and lack of love.

Week 7_Friday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 7:44-50  SOAP Luke 7:47, 50

I loved to hear my grandpa talk about his salvation experience.  He was so visibly grateful for salvation and the change it brought into his life.  He changed the legacy of our family, allowing me to be raised in a christian home.  I am grateful I was saved young, but I do see a lack of love and appreciation for God in my life.  Jesus scorned this lack of love from the Ephesian church,  "But I have this against you, that you have abandoned the love you had at first." Revelation 2:4

The good news is that we can pray for this love to return.  Paul did for the Philippians, "And it is my prayer that your love may abound more and more, with knowledge and all discernment." Phippians 1:9  This is my prayer today.

Week 7_Thursday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 7:36-43  SOAP Luke 7:41-43

What courage this woman, who was likely a prostitute, had to enter this Pharisee's home.  When I get to heaven, I will find out what exactly was going through her mind.  Did she go seeking forgiveness or with gratitude because she had been forgiven?  Sadly, the Pharisee was so blinded by his attempts to trap Jesus, he didn't see the significance of this woman's presence.  She was showing Christ a great amount of love.

I can't imagine the amount of guilt this woman lived with.  Yet Christ willingly forgave, which is the point of this passage.  His grace and love is unconditional, available to everyone who will receive.  Father, help me love you with her kind of love, showing intense gratitude for your forgiveness and mercy in my life.

I highly recommend this book that Kacee let me borrow.  This passage in Luke reminds me of the message in Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.

Week 7_Wednesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 7:18-35  SOAP Luke 7:33-35

What an interesting verse (Luke 7:35).  When I saw it was our memory verse this week, I was intrigued, not having memorized this one before.  The Pharisees couldn't be pleased - not by John the Baptist and not by Jesus.  They were two totally different men, John with his crazy appearance and interesting eating habits.  Jesus with his sinner friends and appearances at weddings.  No, these two men were not alike.  But the message was the same, "Repent and follow Jesus."  Jesus addresses the Pharisees' unbelief by saying, "Look at the proof.  Look at the ones following the teaching of John.  Look at the ones following my teaching.  They are the children of wisdom."

The ones who were following Jesus and John were proof enough of the correctness of their teaching.  Is my life proof of the correctness of Christ's teaching?  Does my life provide justification for this wisdom?  Am I a child of wisdom?  God's wisdom must characterize my life and my choices.  I can't be a mess like everyone else who is unsaved.  I must be wise, following God's Word and wisdom.

Week 7_Tuesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 7:11-17  SOAP Luke 7:13-15

No one was too far gone for Jesus.  I was amused by the verse describing the pall-bearers standing still as Jesus approached them.  It was a pollution for anyone to touch a bier carrying a dead body.  So you can imagine their initial reaction when Jesus walks up to it and touches it!  I was also struck by the specific mention of Jesus' compassion.  He performed miracles, not only to show God's glory, but because He loved the people.

Death was not powerful enough to keep Christ from healing this man.  Think of the spiritual indications here.  Romans 5:17 says, "For if, because of one man’s trespass, death reigned through that one man, much more will those who receive the abundance of grace and the free gift of righteousness reign in life through the one man Jesus Christ."  Christ is still raising the dead today!  Satan thought he was cunning by causing the sinful fall of man, but Jesus has power to overcome death by sin!  Hallelujah!

Week 7_Monday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 7:1-10  SOAP Luke 7:7, 9

Faith is the key here.  The centurion expresses his faith in Jesus, not only as able to heal his servant.  He expresses faith in Jesus' deity, as one with the authority to heal by a simple word.  This is what Jesus was looking for from all the people who witnessed his healing.  He wanted their faith in who He was.

Imagine if we had the same response to Jesus the centurion did.  "Jesus, you only have to say the word for my marriage to be healed."  "Jesus, at your word, my child will stop wandering from you."  Jesus, only speak and my financial hardships will be relieved."  How often do we live life in a cycle of faithlessness, not believing Jesus is powerful enough to accomplish things like this?  I am changing my speech today, deliberately voicing my faith in Christ to accomplish anything I ask.

Read Luke 6:43-49  SOAP Luke 6:45, 49

There is direct connection here between the fruit we produce and the words we speak.  What we say is an overflow of what resides in our hearts.  This is so convicting to me because I can often be sharp-tongued.  This means that a sharp, critical spirit is residing in my soul.

I must build my mental state upon God's Word.  Failure to do so will cause my plans to crumble, like a house without a foundation.  I must first be honest with myself before I can meet the needs of those I lead.  Father, help me recognize my own words of evil as a heart of evil.  Help me build my life upon your Word, not my own pride or ambition.  Help me produce good fruit you can be proud of.

Week 6_Thursday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 6:37-42  SOAP  Luke 6:37

This passage is difficult for someone like me - a person who has grown up in church, was saved at an early age, and spent most of my life in traditional circles.  Not to mention that I grew up as a preacher's kid and am now a preacher's wife.  Judgment is almost bred in me!  I've spent my whole life consumed with the problems of other people and the task of diagnosing them.  I think it's hard to distinguish between seeing the truth of someone's condition and responding to their need in love.

Let's face it, it's easy to say, "I told you so."  I see people make huge mistakes, then reap the consequences both immediately and years later.  Then they have the audacity to act surprised when their poor choices catch up with them!  I believe this passage does not negate the need for a cautionary word or spiritual challenge.  Instead, I believe it is Christ's admonition to change my heart perspective.  Yes, people do dumb things that might seem like obvious mistakes to me.  But my response should be one of unconditional love and forgiveness.  I must be there to help pick up the pieces when they hit bottom.

Jesus goes on to say that I have enough to worry about just to keep myself from sin (the speck vs. the plank).  I am just as tempted by sin as the ones I lead.  Father, help me see my own need of mercy so quickly that I am never hesitant to extend mercy to others.  Help me live in a spirit of forgiveness and grace.

Week 6_Tuesday

Good Morning Girls

Read Luke 6:12-26  SOAP  Luke 6:20-23

I realized that this message about the Beatitudes was specifically for Jesus' disciples.  They had left their jobs and families to follow Christ.  They would be hungry, poor, depressed, and hated.  Jesus says this to them as a fact, saying that they will most assuredly endure suffering for His sake.

This made me wonder if my life is marked by the same dedication to follow Christ the disciples had.  It is much easier to fall into step with the world, working toward the same things: a good steady job, a nice house, decent vehicles, fashionable clothes, regular salon visits, etc.  Do you think any of these things were on the disciples' radar?  The very thought is absurd!  Perhaps this realization can lead me to a deeper commitment to the call of God.  I'm not meant to build a life of luxury here, but look forward to it in heaven someday.  Removing the distraction of material gain can free me to pursue more meaningful things, namely making disciples.

Suffering has a way of focusing our hearts on God's purpose.  It forces us to evaluate what we are doing.  I pray that I will have the wisdom to see this if I find myself in the throes of great suffering one day.  The trade-off in heaven will be totally worth it!
